When I started working with animals in 2003, Labrador Retrievers were a common pet to have. I’ve noticed over the past decade or so, that French bulldogs have become really popular and I see a lot of them at the clinics where I work. What is going on?

In this post, we’ll dive into the phenomenon of Frenchie fever and uncover why these lovable dogs are stealing hearts left and right.
The Rise of French Bulldogs – Why They Make Great Pets
In the past few years, French Bulldogs have skyrocketed in popularity, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after breeds worldwide. Their rise to fame is due to a combination of factors, including their cuteness and affection. Whether you reside in a spacious suburban home or a cozy city apartment, Frenchies are perfectly content as long as they’re by your side.
They are really laid back and have moderate exercise needs which is a plus. It makes them ideal companions for individuals with busy lifestyles, while their gentle disposition makes them wonderful playmates for children and other pets.
Instagram and TikTok Sensations
It’s not a secret that social media has played a major role in the Frenchie frenzy. These cute dogs have millions of followers on social media, where they share their funny moments and unique personalities with fans all over the world.

Another reason for the rise of Frenchie fever is the endorsement of celebrities and influencers. Hollywood A-listers and social media influencers alike love French Bulldogs, often showing them off in photos, videos, and paparazzi shots.

With their undeniable star power, Frenchies have solidified their status as the must-have accessory for the jet set crowd.
Health Concerns For French Bulldogs
While French Bulldogs captivate many with their charm, it’s crucial to address their health concerns:
Brachycephalic Syndrome: Due to their flat faces and shortened airways, Frenchies can suffer from breathing difficulties, which may lead to respiratory distress.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD): This condition involves herniated discs in the spine, which can cause pain, nerve damage, and in severe cases, paralysis.
Skin Allergies: French Bulldogs are susceptible to various skin allergies, which may result in itching, redness, and secondary infections if left untreated.
Joint Problems: They can develop joint issues like hip dysplasia, which can cause discomfort and mobility issues.
Eye Problems: French Bulldogs are prone to eye conditions such as cherry eye, cataracts, and corneal ulcers.
Heat Sensitivity: Due to their brachycephalic features, Frenchies have difficulty regulating their body temperature and are susceptible to heatstroke in hot weather.
Embracing the Frenchie Phenomenon
French Bulldogs have won over dog lovers everywhere and are now one of the most popular breeds around. Their social media presence and celebrity owners have helped make them a top trend in the dog world.
That said, anyone thinking about getting a Frenchie should understand the breed’s health issues and be ready to care for them properly, while also enjoying the love and companionship these dogs can bring.
